You cannot register the following as trademarks in Canada:
- Generic names
- Signs that conflict with Canadian moral standards
- Signs that may disrupt public order
- Names of international organizations
- Flags or symbols of countries and regions
- Surnames
- Marks that are not distinctive
- Geographical names
- Deceptive names suggesting a connection to a living person
- Portraits of individuals who have died in the last 30 years
- Signatures of individuals who have died in the last 30 years
- Marks related to plant varieties (under the Plant Breeders' Rights Act)
- Marks that could be confused with those already published in the Canadian Trademarks Journal
