What types of marks are not eligible for trademark registration in the United States?

In the United States, you can't register trademarks that go against public morals, might cause public unrest, or are just generic terms. Also, you can't register state names, national flags, symbols of international organizations, marks that aren't distinctive, last names, or names of places and locations.
